Chan, Q. (2005). The Dreaming. Los Angeles, United States of America: Tokyopop Inc.

[ fantasy / horror graphic novel ]

If you’ve never read a graphic novel then Queenie Chan’s The Dreaming is a good place to start, designed for teens, the Dreaming is a stunning introduction to Manga.

Amber and Jeannie are sent to live at mysterious boarding school in the Australian outback, once there they begin to experience some strange and creepy goings on, it appears the school is haunted and there are students missing.

The two sisters are wonderful characters; outstanding individually but with enough conflict and chemistry to create a dynamic duo. The plot, characters and setting combine flawlessly so the narrative can move along without a hitch.

As this is part one of a series (of three) Chan deliberately sets up an atmosphere, she sets up more questions than provides answers but this just leaves the reader wanting more, the eerily chilling story is compelling and has me hooked…

If you are interested in stories about forging an identity whilst in a search for truth, and a few ghosts thrown in for good measure, then look no further The Dreaming is what you’ve been looking for.
